Is one better than the other? Or when should I use them?

well. whats good about swords is you can use them again if you pass to sammy and paladin.

with axes. if you pass to sammy u cannot use axes.

well i mean. axes are good.

so for options. if you dont want to invest alot of fgs. you can get a sword set. and just climb till monk. then make a new character and do it again.

or if u want to go farther in the ladder you will want to go with.

daggers and axes. that way you can go all the way to warlock. then you wil need some caster charms.

hoenstly. Swords suck. They have the largest range of damage.

so sometimes you will hit a toon for zero. and other times you will hit for 3000+

or a crit will roll low and youll get a Red with <100 dmg, or Super crazy over high and get 20,000. Totally erratic.

long term in my opinion axes are significantly more reliable.

If you plan on playing a fair amount then you should go swords so you can play first 3 classes without having to buy more gear as well as a few different feeder classes.

axes are the best, and most valuable

but swords are great for beginners, they will get you to monk, then you can use em again on ninja.

As for strength/dex ratios, is that how much I need of each to increase damage?

That has changed over the years. Now you just want to put all points into what ever the higher of the two is. For swords you put all into strength. That will increase the damage you do the most.
