Be prepared to invest quite a bit of FG into gear sets. This way you can play all the character classes once you pass from one of the feeder classes and unlock the next character class. You can solo play (which takes longer) or play in groups...but be prepared to have some decent gear so you're helpful to the group, rather then being carried by the group.

The game is heavily gear based. Other than that, it's clicking the mouse on monsters.

When you reach lvl71, a new icon appears in town and you are allowed to attempt the Master Quest. You either pass or fail, and it gets more difficult the more character classes you unlock. But passing the MQ which the unlocked characters earns you more guild points. On softcore, you earn +1 for failing. On Hardcore, everything is doubled since there is high risk of losing everything on that character if you die.

But I don't want to ruin the MQ, you'll see when you get there...

There's lots of information if you look around the Ladder Slasher section(s). Do some reading. A good place to start is the LS portal: http://ladderslasher.d2jsp.org and read the subsections to get familiar with the game mechanics, item mods, etc, etc.
