Does whistling have drop penalties?
for example if i'm level 57 and set my mobs to level 55, would i get the same drops as whistling level 55s at level 55?
also, do i get a penalty from doing low level treasure maps?

and finally.. how does one reset whistling?
do i just type it in as my current level or is there a quicker method?

trying to see if i can farm lower level gear on a high level character if im struggling at my current max.

fighting against lower lvl monsters will decrease your drops and exp a lot. 2 lvls lower should allrdy be bad.. 5 levels terrible

You have a better chance finding low level gear at higher levels than you do finding high level gear at higher levels.

Yes, whistling does have drop penalties. Just for whistling you are already penalized on drops because whistling only spawns weak monsters of the level you whistle at.

If you reduce the level of whistled monsters below your current level you will further be penalized as Alex said.

You are penalized for treasure chests below your level as well, but not as severely as with monsters. Also treasure chests still have to have drops in them whereas monsters do not have this requirement, so at least you don't get skunked with treasure chests, even if the drops aren't good.

Whistling defaults to your current level unless you type in something different. I pretty much never whistle so you'll have to confirm with someone who does it, but I believe that if you want it to automatically move up with you as you level after having typed in something different you will need to close your window, then open it back up again... actually that might not work... Surely logging out and back in will work but then you'll lose your game if that matters... I guess if you're whistling it doesn't matter

Farming lower level gear on a higjh level character works but if you kill monstesr much lower than you then... it won't work as well.

If you could, it would be beneficial yes. You are not allowed to whistle higher than your level

Just another note:

Exploring catacomb can spawn monsters (normal) from 1-3 levels as of your character level. Whistling is only at your character level.

Trap doors are normally 3(5)+ levels higher than your character level (when you first fall in), you will notice that the longer you are in a Trap door and level up, you will catch up to the monsters level (well that used to be the case ages ago).

A lot of people like group whistling for speed runs, more people = more item drops they say.

What level gear are you trying to find? You stated low level, or are you talking like Mid level 25 - 35?

Just my personal view on drops.

I have found plenty of Tier VI / VII / VIII / IX & X's from level 30 to MQ, have found some level 40 to 55's, but more often @ level 60 to MQ. Depending on Events of course. I don't really do Trap Doors.
