Recently got to rank 2 transmuting and I really don’t know when to press the stabilize and transmute buttons?
I usually just wait the for the volatility to tick and counter it, sometimes the bars move a lot in my favor, sometimes they dont move at all, or move really far against my favor.
My question is, are there any visual cues to when you should be pressing the buttons?
I notice the little . Or ! Next to the transmute but idk what those mean

I press and hold transmute until volatility bar is up to 70-80%, move over to stabilize and click and hold until volatility bar is down to ~10%, move over to transmute button and hold. Rinse and repeat

It's not like other skills where you are prompted to click a specified button.
You click/hold transmute to lower the transmutation bar to complete mute; and click/hold the stabilize button when the volatility is getting to close too full.

Edit: the ! button is just an indicator telling you that one of the buttons was pressed.

Gotcha gotcha, thank you!
All the other skills I've tried supposed to tap at right time so I thought muting would be the same but guess not.
Thank you for the tip mate!

No problemo. If you need any further info about skilling in the game you can check out this guide, made by the best slasher in the game:

it seems easier for me to keep it at 10% -40% then transmute 1-2 times on the higher mutes at rank 3... But could be wrong seems past 50% it takes longer to get it back to 10% or less rather then try keeping it close to 0

Definitely second for click and hold here. Just an FYI once you get up past like t3/t4 items, it takes longer, but the bars are much less volatile (they both move smaller amounts at a time).

Like for me, doing t7 items I can hold mute for 30-45s before I have to switch to stabilize for 30-45s. Just something to look forward to!
