Great ideas and posts for your Competition.
I like a lot of the ideas and had come across a lot of the issues for a competition myself because of the game mechanics and how to make it benefit both Newcomers with zero or hardly any gear and those players with gear. Thus I broke it down, but also had issues.
Thus, I thought about starting a competition based on Prof hunting, just like you previously and wanted to start off with a prize pool of 10,000 forum gold (10k), but I wanted to split it up to make it fair.
Example: It was a +Prof POINT Achievement Competition and broken down by:
Core: Soft & Hard - Thus a participant chooses either core.
... Solo & Group - Thus a participant chooses either Solo or Group.
Here we start off with 10,000 forum gold divided to 5,000 for each core (Soft / Hard)
... Now you divide the 5,000 forum gold for Solo or Group = 2,500 forum gold.
So, 2,500 is divided into the top 3 prizes = 1,000 (1st) ... 850 (2nd) and 650 (3rd) prize.
Still had issues doing the above and came up with one(1) solution, I had to choose one(1) Proficiency type ... Melee, Cast, Heal, or specific skill like Fishing, Cooking or Transmuting etc.
Now with the "ticketing" idea, it is great, it is like playing the lottery, and I would hope that the tickets are designated to specific task... split up the prize pool for certain things... I am not sure how it would work, it makes it harder if each player can participate in multiple things... like my example, Core / Solo or Hardcore this or that Prof etc.
The issue is me proving whether or not someone followed any rules of solo/group. Also, a lot of players will do both. The player with the MOST prof last time is mostly a solo player, so it's more about the time put in rather than anything else.
Finally i dont wish to split rewards by core. I doubt people will change cores for a flimsy reward of upto 1.5k and I see no reason to reward the fact there is less HC players so they'd have better odds per person.
To make it more new player friendly 2 things need to happen:
1. PM any new players to say hey, you should get involved, this was probably the biggest issue from last year of not getting enough new guys involved by actually speaking to them
2. Make the requirements easier to reach. Last time it was 15000 which a reasonable number of even the veterans didn't achieve due to how busy a lot of people are these days.
Another thing i could do is just make the rewards better for that category.
As mentioned, doing a lottery giving an amount of tickets based on your placement will still give better winning odds to those in lower places. As in theory even someone in last place can win the maximum prize.
