The button DEFINITELY does something.
It makes all the difference, actually.
Be sure you're attempting to catch level one fish, and not some really high level.

Just click, wait for the fish to attack, click again, and so on.
When "SNAG" appears, simply click (or double click if you prefer) the button.

It has for me, other than the fact that I have no rod. ;/

I snapped my splintered rod with 23 dura, by missing a snag, vs a lvl5 (I'm at rank 2 prof).

So, I solo'd cata for a couple runs, got a plain splintered, now going after the lvl4 fisihies, the lvl5's are a bit much.

So you can try solo cata, might just work for you.

I have tried a few times, but I'm a Magician, so I have to heal almost non-stop just to stay alive.
Can rods be transferred yet? If so, I'll just solo the maze on a melee character.

Could always transfer rods, far as I know. I transferred one the first day.

Confirmation: Rod durability has to do with the strength of the rod, aka how much the rod can stand up to. For those who refuse to see fishing as anything more than another battle, you can think of it as "life".
