I haven't even used anything but the loaner rod so far.

I know what you're talking about though. Sometimes clicking the snag counter will make you crit, in a sense, while at other times it doesn't do anything but prevent you from being 'critted'.
Meh. I just restated what you said.

Don't think of it as "crit" as that's totally wrong.
You have a fishing rod, and you're trying to catch a fish. He's hooked, you're reeling him in.
When you're fighting a fish, sometimes he drags out your line, and bends the tip of your rod dangerously low. if you fight him too hard, then your rod can break. Sometimes, even if you don't fight, your rod can break, so it's better to either flip your real, giving him your line, or to snip your line before the break happens, or set your drag way lose.
However, when the fish gets tired, there are times that you get to reel him in half the distance before he starts fighting you again.
So what you call a "crit" is more just you getting the opportunity to reel the fish in a longer distance before he fights to get the hell away.

With a "snag", basically your catch is trying to hide (usually in water weeds, or behind/under a rock shelf). That's a desperation tactic, and a lot of the time they swim TOWARD you to do so. If you can prevent the snag, then you gain a lot of leverage on the fish.
Yes, btw, I fish.
