Clubs are the go to weapon for basically anyone with no other means, it makes sense, cave men used clubs, lvl 1 characters on diablo 2 used clubs etc.

Proficiency is not based on the weapon type, it is based on the character class being able to use it better.
Novice club user vs Trained club user.

Clubs usable on all characters sure, same would go with dagger, everyone knows how to use a knife.

Why must there always be a downside? Cant the downside ever just be the cost of the item itself? Think about it.. an item everyone can use would be high value and getting a good one would be a huge downside imo

Hang on guys. Allowing clubs to be used on every single class is not good. It goes against the whole point of gear. I'm asking for one more class to be able to use them not the whole damn game.

Weapon proficiency gain is a downside in its' own right. 1-10 prof gain per monster wave.
Full groups are at a disadvantage here, now you want to hinder club users more. Myself
personally, that would be unfair and unbalanced even more, thus making Daggers / Axes
more of a wanted item along with swords.

On another note being a Guardian lover, your idea would make that class even worse to use.
