Do i get to choose when my hour starts? the main problem with groups is that i need 4 other willing players, so if i attempted to do this challenge right now as an example i would fail as i can't get a group at this precise second. The positive is i get to do other stuff whilst i'm waiting potentially including solo'ing on a different character.
Also one huge huge huge thing about this competition is the vast majority of the experienced players have taken the goal of it to heart of using their main's.
Any of the top group climbers could easily have hit the 100k mark by this point if they'd used a fresh character, but the thing is, what's the point? to win some silly competition?
This at least levels the playing field to give a few more players a chance.
Remember, anyone over 20 prof is spending the first 20 levels gaining 0 prof and there's quite a few of us in this category (or next to 0 prof, i'm gaining a tiny bit of dagger prof between level 13 and 20 currently on samurai)
