The common practice is to trade as soon as both are on and he probably saw you online, pm'd you and got ignored. Personally, I would just have assumed that you backed out of the trade at that point and put it back up for sale.

I actually DID message him that I’m not available Sunday. I wasn’t aware that Monday was going to be super busy as well.....

No. He agreed to the trade at 400 with you not responsible for fee. Your online availability is what it is. His attempts to dodge fees in spite of your agreed on price is his issue.

I'd have noted the red flag when you let him know you'd be offline with your wife and he's spamming you. Unless really in need of the item, at that point, I'd simply say "nvm, stop messaging me".
