I do think the rate at which the monsters increase in difficulty needs to be examined. The difference between lvl 70 and 75 mobs is drastic enough but then 75 to 80 or 85? I just think since originally these levels were meant to get hella hard because going passed 71 normally meant the 101 climb. Going to 101 was meant to be a serious challenge because you literally had to choose to go into it. Now the difficulty doesn't make any sense.
Personally I believe the higher levels and diminishing returns for experience and drops were introduced because Datis reached character levels of 150+, I believe he could not achieve 300 because of the nerfs that Paul introduced... hence the reason why it was pointless for Datis to carry on even when his motives were to help lower level characters climb from 1-71.
Also, he found bugs in the game that have been cleared up since 1.24. Now we have no drop % because of higher level past X level vs ML and so on.
EDIT: Paul countered Datis with exponentially harder monsters, but failed, now we are stuck with the junk drops with harder monsters and no higher tier items to deal with them.
