It is best to ensure that your char is within 5 levels of the item you are welling

Also, remember that prof will not increase until your char lvl is 1 lvl higher than your prof lvl.
For example, in order to increase your lvl 7 prof, your char has to be lvl 8 or higher

okay thought there is a bonus in a well that you dont have to be higher then your prof level

nah, its fucking stupid, you have to ONLY be within the 5 levels. so if you are throwing a level IX (30) weapon, you have to be level 40-44. otherwise you gain severely reduced prof.

While welling is certainly great, at prof lvl 7 I would suggest getting to lvl 8, putting on the biggest tank/life armor + life charm and use the weakest sword you can. The idea is to hit the monster as many times as possible

How?
It was abused severely when first installed - you could pound on Sneaky forever and get tons of prof.
Some players got to a very high prof in a ridiculously fast time.
Oh yeah -- their prof was reduced once the abuse was noticed

Hence the limit of 10 hits per mob for prof purposes was introduced.
