I actually use Swords and Spears, but it requires me to have both STR and DEX gear, not really a good idea if you are on a budget, but using those two weapons I can melee all the way to Warlock and do good damage.

During the lower levels 0-10, it's better to use a normal weapon, because you can usually 1-shot most mobs using abilities properly, and heavies have the delay which will slow you down early. They make up for it later on, because a normal weapon has a harder time 1-shotting mobs where a heavy can do it a lot easier.
