I guess whistling until 45 would be for the best? That should allow for level 55 maps on the starter map theoretically. I'll try a few climbs to see if any higher level maps come as a result. I'll post here with my findings.

Please someone post if this is just crazy talk.

Personally, I don't think that is going to work.
Secondly, whistling from level 1 to 45 means you will miss out on the chances of good maps in between, like maybe something like this example ONLY:

Mythical imbued mountain map
Level Req: 30
Use Item to Receive Effect
+1 Warm Lights
+10 Evil Presence
+1 Rooms
Quantity: 3
+15 Level Cap

Monster Cap 55 + 15 = 70, This could be found when completing a catacomb @ level 20.

Just a thought.

No that is not something that has ever worked in the past 8 years (since I’ve been playing). I did hear that this was possible during the very early days of catacombs, but I was not able to verify.

Anyway, Rex is mostly correct here… the map drop is based on the character level when completing the cata [combined with the level (size) of the cata being completed]. Maps can drop more than two tiers higher than the completing character, though. Two tiers is probably just the highest that Rex remembers. I’ve had maps drop 5+ tiers higher than the completing character.

Thanks for confirming Whistle doesn't work anymore. It did when whistle n maps were new, but that got fixed early from my recollection. Not sure if it was in the beta testing stage though.

Oh... I have never encountered Maps to be higher than two(2) tiers ... at times I complete a catacomb at level 1 and the map is Tier III ... not sure that I have found a Tier IV map when completing a catacomb at level 1.

I can see that this could happen in a Trap Door, however, if you drop in a Trap Door, you will never complete it at level 1 since the catacomb size is increased to the monster level:

Example of one of my TD encounters: (I will test more of course. :D )

Just going to test the dimensions of the Trap door I just fell into... level 3.39 ... a normal catacomb would be around 6w x 5h, but since this is a TD... the dimension is based off of the Monster level of the TD. Luckily there isn't an Event with Min/Max monster level.

Height 7 (definitely)
Width 8 (guess)
Current level: 4.73

Above is jotted down just in case I fall into another Trap Door.

Confirmed... 8 width x 7 height ... still need to back track, currently level 5.38.

EDIT: 8 x 7 dimension is equivalent to a level 8 catacomb.. however... started at level 3.39.

Theoretical thinking, I did not check it out before.

When you fall in a TD, the catacomb size increases based on the Monster "Level" (not difficulty), however, I did not continue after completing the TD from level 3 where the dimensions were equal to a level 8 catacomb run and I was level 5 or 6... I actually left game, and re created the catacomb, bringing the dimensions of the catacomb to my level... I did NOT continue in the same game to see if the size of the catacomb increased as if I was still in a TD.

I will have to check this out at a later date.

EDIT: maybe, if you take over a higher level TD catacomb and complete it with a lower level character maybe? Or was that also fixed. hmm, I can not test these things out.

I guess ill start fresh maps at level 35 and complete them. Ill do multiple runs and see what the highest I manage to pull. If I start at 40, I tend to screw myself out of good evil presence mobs in the early 50s.

Hope you get some great results. Ignoring Emblems will be hard.

This also. :D

Oh BWC ... Had a thought about 5 Tiers (still need to test). Clearing low catacombs before level 5 may get you a Tier V map. Reasoning could be that Tier I / II & III's are only level 0, thus IV (lvl 5) and V (lvl 10) may drop. This is still speculation, but I don't think it works if your character is level 5 and above for map drops.

Talking about tier XII and XIII maps at lvl 20 by entering the catacomb on a lvl 30/35 and then swapping down to a lvl 1 character and running it :P

E: When I first started playing I used to do something similar by going down a ton of trapdoors without swapping characters, but in the rewrite, Paul made trapdoor maze sizes correspond to the catacomb level... before, they were your character's size, but of higher level so it was a LOT easier to get a high level maps in small mazes, but alas...

Ahh, my braincells have been deteriorating over the years (mostly from alchohol) and forgot about those days running catas with Buf, Datis, Marie, Sharp, Andy, and guildies etc. :D Yeah, my latest data is current then, but will still check out. :D

Thanks for the recap of the good days.

Iirc we started this map between lvl 25 and 30. Didn't leave game or switch chars at all. XIV map dropped 3 tiers above the driver (me). I was pretty close to the optimal level to walk the final step. IMO it would only have been better if I were lvl 39, but 40 is still low for this map size, can't complain.
