I don't think this as big of an issue on desktop, but I'm probably not the only one paranoid of accidentally deleting stuff on mobile.
Thoughts?

This could be added as an option you could enable in settings rather than made default.
On desktop you drag and drop, but on mobile it is A LOT easier to have an item selected from your inventory and accidently tap the trashcan

My main concern about this is when I'm in higher levels and swapping on life regen gear frequently.

Oh, you're simply talking about the trash can icon alone?

Still no from me, don't pick up so many items that you are trash canning them more than using the shrine then

The trash icon is not available on the "Equipment" tab, so just stay on that one and you need not worry about accidentally clicking the trash icon

I vote yes. Jon if you choose not to use it that's fine, but it doesn't hurt anyone and just prevents ppl who may do some solo'ing from mobile from potentially losing a valuable item. If it's in the settings then it won't bother anybody.

How much does it need to be dumbed down so people don't shrine or trash their gear? It used to appear permanently, an update made it hidden until an item got selected.

It seems like njags changes are a one-way street, and "optional" changes are not something he likes to do. He changed it enough, we don't need additional pop-ups on a screen just to confirm an action where the existing windows in the game seem to barely fit on mobile as it is.

If you stay on the Equipment tab, it's not possible to delete it at all.

Here's your solution if you are scared of the terrifying Trash Can icon.
Go To Town, tap on the Transmuting Icon, close the Transmuting box, bam.. you now have only the equipment tab open and can swap to your Regen gear.

It's also easier to click on Mobile and 1 less click than going to town, clicking the gear icon, clicking on the inventory icon, clicking on the equipment tab.

Whether the bin was show before or not doesn't change an accident of the cursor moving over that part of the screen. It would happen accidentally in the same fashion still.

I'm not in favor of things that make the game more clunky BUT if there was a toggle option for this it would make playing on mobile completely safe and u wouldn't have to worry about accidents anymore.

i see where you are going for this but in my opinion the better option would be to make items "lockable". for example ctrl+alt click an item and its puts a little lock icon in the corner of the despcriptions and from now on prevents that item from being shrined/muted/trashed etc until you remove that restriction.
could be tap+hold to activate/deactivate

Also happens when you tap the glyph (I don't know the process) but I've trashed (or used) glyphs instead of moving them or de-selecting one that had the same stat than the other.
