get your shit down to 1 duribility ish, wait for like 3-4 reds in a row thne hit it... works like 90% of the time

so what im saying is.. there is no upgrade trick
all u do is take ur item and put it on the anvil and wish luck urself - same way as u make Runewords in diablo.. its all about luck there's no trick
