I watched bruce lee, he said eye gouging is okay. So i will do that. I don't live to deal out pain and trade punches. I will always try to calm down a situation and/or leave, and/or call the police. I don't care how low i will have to go, i will beg and plead, call me a jerk, call me whatever you like. But if you attack me even if i back away and act calm, or even try to run - expect to scream in pain within the next 0.5 seconds. Doesn't matter how big you are, if i throw my fingers into your eyes, it doesn't matter if you're andré the giant. You're gonna bend over screaming in pain.

Only thing about this is, if the opponent is wearing glasses. A quick side slap to flick the glasses off first, you may have to take a punch or two, but train to learn this in quick session. It's an immediate neutralization of a situation.

If you combine this with simple boxing techniques, keeping a guard up, that is probably the most efficient self defense technique. Keeping a guard up with open hands can be even more effective, blocking a larger area, maybe even if the opponent use eye gouge themselves, open palm block can even prevent that.

Take up lee's technique of blocking and punching simultaneously also. You can always expect the opponent to throw a fist. So blocking randomly will usually catch a fist to the arm or hand, protecting your face. And if you hit his eyes - the situation is over.

I actually was in a situation about 3 months ago... was on bus ride home from aqua exercise. That bus comes from the municipality hospital. Not usually there are crazy people on it, but this time that was the case .. he was very drunk or drugged, monday, obviously been to the hospital, and they had released him too early.

Sat beside randoms, talking like he was still at a party. I usually blast motörhead on earphones and phase out everything else, but this time i had them off kept watching him. As the person he sat beside got off the bus, he moved to another. Luckily not me, i sit in the back, in front of the exit stairs.

He was not very big, perhaps 5.5 feet (180 cm) and regular build. I'm 175 cm. But he was moving quite aggressively, like he was not sluggish. I.e.capable of moving fast.

Towards the end station (city center), he got increasingly aggressive. There was a muslim woman sitting in front. He got aggressive towards her, right 10 meters before the station "You have it so much better than us!!!" screaming in her face, making racist comments.

Bus driver shouted "Calm down and get off when we stop" - he shifted attention to the bus driver, screaming at him as well. The bus driver seemed inexperienced and slightly afraid. I was making my way to the center of the bus, immediately calling 112 (911 to you guys), police said they were 2 minutes away. I stayed there, watching and memorizing.

The guy placed himself right in the doorway. A woman on the bus went up to him, unafraid, shouting in his face "Can you fk off, people like you only create hell!!" .. he threw two punches at her, not hard, but hit her face. Bus driver shoved him outside, guy got more aggressive, but stumbled backwards. Woman went outside and disappeared. Bus driver tried to close doors. The guy stood up, got his leg between the door, lol. Two teenage boys came running to and pinned him to the ground, told him to calm down. He did. I informed everyone that police is right around the corner.

They went away, he got up and wandered around a little. Police arrived. Bus driver was a bit shaken. I told him he handled it well, take it easy, i'll talk to the cops. Cops talked to the guy, he of course calmed down then. I gave details and went home. Got called in for witness testimony, they were impressed with my level of memory and detail description. But probably wondered why i didn't step in.

Point here is this: I realize i could have stepped in and done more. But some points to this:

1) The guy was out of control. The proper thing for me to do, would be to either A) Early on at the bus ride, accompany him, talk to him and keep him calm throughout the bus ride so he would not cause a fuss. However, i did not know if he was going all the way to town. B) Go to the front, tell bus driver i was about to confront him, maybe stop the bus, and then confront him. Tell him to please calm down and stop bothering passengers. If he got aggressive, which he 90% certain would, pin him down and hold him locked until police arrived. However, problem with this is, i am not trained to do that. That is though something one CAN practice at. But something very few are trained to do, especially 1 on 1. The two teenage boys had obviously trained at this, it happened quickly.

2) Inside a bus, there are very close quarters, no space for passengers to move around. A truly crazy person can cause a lot of damage quickly. I didn't know if he was carrying a knife. However, if it had turned violent, i would use the eye gouge, hard, fast and relentless. If that hadn't worked, kick to the groin. I don't mess around, trade punches and prolong the fight. If people act like idiots - be prepared to be neutralized quickly. Everyone should learn to think like this. If someone else acts ruthless - you have to be three times as ruthless. Lol, as aragorn says; "Show them no mercy, for you shall receive none!" Most people do not live in violence. Those that do, must expect to be treated accordingly if they bother peaceful citizens.

3) I told the police; IF he had gotten MORE violent, i.e., hitting hard, swinging, kicking, the woman, bus driver and others, then i WOULD step in. I did not tell the police i would eye gouge him, but that is most likely what i would have done. Did not feel comfortable doing it, but i would have done it. As bruce lee say; "It is about conditioning yourself to move, and when you move, be determined to move, not taking even an inch off your intended movement" or close to that. When he hit the woman, i was close to moving forward, but he hit her twice, not hard, the bus driver shoved him outside, he stumbled backwards. That happened quite quickly. If he had continued with the assault, i was intending to move in - But then talk to him first, tell him to "please calm down and relax, let's not escalate this further, let's go for a walk and chat, okay?", remaining calm in body language. I would also tell others to walk away, i'll handle this. IF he had attacked me then, then i would use the eye gouge. Hard, fast and relentless.

4) I know self defense is about using the least necessary force. But to me, this is kind of fallacious. Regular people are not trained in martial arts, and want to live peaceful lives. We are not trained to know how to use "exact amounts" of force or techniques, to disarm and neutralize someone going crazy, in a peaceful manner, like pinning them. That is not so easy to do for someone untrained.

5) In the case he had drawn a knife, speed is of the essence. As soon as you see him reaching for his pocket, use the eye gouge. If he managed to get the knife out, kick his hand fast, front kick. Bruce lee does this in the movie Fists of fury, in the third to last sword fight. It is a cinematic scene, but if possible, kick the hand with the knife - it has a high chance to knock the knife out of the hand. If that is not possible, grabbing the arm/wrist with both hands extremely tight, and moving to the side of it, is the best option. When you have moved yourself to a more advantageous position, use the eye gouge with one hand, then grab his arm/wrist again, if he has not then dropped his knife. This can be practiced.

There might be the possibility of "trading a stab" - he might get in a hit on you, but then you have hit his eyes, and he is 95% certain disabled to do much more because of intense pain or eye functional disarming, allowing you to remove yourself and others and call for ambulance and police.

6) There is always a chance it will escalate the situation. Someone drugged can endure a lot of pain, not even sensating pain at all. That is why you have to do it hard and relentless, maybe even causing somewhat permanent damage, so that they lose the ability to see. But what is the option? You or someone else peaceful being harmed for life, or maybe even worse? Take no chances. Study bruce lee's techniques and philosophy.

I even bought his book "Striking thoughts", very philosophical, but a fun read.
