My old hard disk died. Once connected, it just does clicking noise and PC doesn't recognize it.
It contains some valuable stuff:
1. Old diablo2 trophy items, screenshots and messages between myself and my best diablo2 buddies.
2. Old saves for some games I like like Skyrim.
3. Homemade prom

Another GC'r and I were just tackling something similar. Not exact, but similar.
Check to see if the hard drive manufacturer has a fix-it/diagnostic software tool...
e.g.: Western Digital has this:

https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/50396There are no guarantees, but it may tell you if the drive is dead dead or recoverable dead. The latter being where you can recover files.
If it is the latter, you may be able to use a file recovery free software called
Disk Drill:
