My bias leans towards autonomous robots/cyborgs. I think that it would be a better first step before coming face to face or to faces with an advanced species of extraterrestrial.

I loved these autonomous/cyborg-like extraterrestrials from A.I. [2001], a film by Steven Spielberg. I do not think that they were biological. They appear to be beyond my comprehension of advance robots.
