It is based on how fast some stars are travelling around center of galaxies or big stellar masses, the observations proves that for thoses stars to travel that fast, it would require the object attracting them to be much more heavier than what it is known. Like 8 or 9x more IIRC
So it would means that a very big part of space matter is unseeable and almost undetectable (only its consequence: gravity), which I dont believe personally. I think there are just way more black holes and that their mass is much more important than what we know about them yet.
