recently I have been drinking only budget red wine.

$5-$20 a bottle.

Found a couple of good ones, found lots of bad ones.

I've noticed that women don't seem to know the difference...

its not just women. whether wine or liquor, even most people who drink drink just to get drunk, they dont really pay attention to the taste, thats not what theyre after, so they all taste the same to them. (someone posted saying that they all taste the same to them, even between bourbon and scotch. i was gonna find that to quote but it musta been a different thread.)

i keep forgetting, i was gonna test my palate by having my wife pour me something without telling me what it is and see if i can figure it out. i think ill be able to. definitely im sure i can tell whether its a bourbon, scotch or islay scotch. those differences to me are so obvious i dont know how anyone couldnt tell the difference.

our favorite wine is a young semi-sweet cabernet, its got a great balance of sweetness and dryness. pretty affordable, too, i stock up when its on sale for ~$6 a bottle. my wife isnt as big a fan of dryer wines but i keep a couple bottles on hand for myself as i like them. that young semi-sweet one is definitely very good, though.

so, we did a lil blind taste-testing tonight.

first, my wife poured one for me. i knew right away it was a scotch, not a bourbon, and that it wasnt an islay. i had a bit more trouble zeroing in on exactly what it was though, as she happened to pick one that i havent had in a while, had kinda forgotten i even had, and which does have a relatively close flavor to some others. i was thinking it was maybe cardhu or clynelish, but in the end it was cragganmore. so i was kinda close but didnt quite hit the nail on the head.

next i poured for her. she had recently had a bunch of candy and shes a bit under the weather, though, so her sense of taste was way off. her sweet receptors were probably overloaded from the candy as she didnt even believe me at first when i said it was balvenie rum cask, as it tasted horrible and she usually likes that one.

she wasnt able to get angels envy, either, as she said she also forgot we had it.

then came my turn again. this time my initial taste was so sweet i almost thought it was drambuie, but the mouthfeel was wrong, too light. a second taste wasnt as sweet, but it still didnt taste quite like a scotch. i asked her if it was even a scotch and when she said she wasnt sure i knew right away that it was jameson. this time i nailed it. B)

was fun, gonna have to do that again...

Does it seem to start stacking up that women cant distinguish alcohol?

Ive been trying this now on dates.

Women don't know.. say it's expensive and they think its lovely.. say it's cheap and they say it's awful.. bottle contents don't really matter to them.
