That’s not necessarily true because God isn’t against you believing in yourself. He’s against people leaning too far on their own understanding because people are fallible. Not everyone is capable of making totally fair and just judgements because of their own biases. He’s against people living a lifestyle that is against His plan for all people. Meaning like doing harm to others.
If everyone committed murder and adultery life would be chaos. It would be hard for anyone to have a good life, But by not doing those things you are doing no harm to others so you have nothing to fear. Accidents still do happen though, which is why people say things like “why would God do ____”. People still have free will to do evil to others. This is why bad things still happen. And people also do stupid stuff which is why accidents happen. But He really just asks the bare minimum of people and some people are too full of their own pride to even do that, hence they will never get along with others or live a happy lifestyle because they will put their faith in material things and things that can’t make them spiritually satisfied the way good relationships and a sense of community can. You don’t have to be a bible thumper to live a Christ-like lifestyle. Everybody sins. Everybody falls short, so that sets the bar pretty low. You can just be good to the people around you and not rude. A lot of Christians are rude and persecute themselves and others trying to take the place of the Holy Spirit to convict people when they do something wrong.
While on that note, the vast majority of Christians I know are living a totally wrong lifestyle full of isolation, anger, self guilt and lack of authentic love for their neighbors. But that just goes to show your personality before Christ will reflect who you are in Christ. For example, If you were a shitty person who was against gay people before going to church you’re probably going to carry that ideal into your relationship with God and therefore any fruit you bear will be rotten.
Really God welcomes all people and it’s those Christians that haven’t taken the time to understand who God really is or the New testament that are ruining it for the rest of the group. Or lean too much on the teachings of Paul specifically because he was a highly flawed individual that came in with a lot of baggage.
People think God is trying to box them into this uncomfortable lifestyle. Really He’s just asking you not to be irresponsible or to cause harm to others. Do right and love others. That’s it. Most people can get on board with that but like I said people always have a way of making things political or forcing their ideals on others. It’s not supposed to be an ideal you’re just supposed to try to be a good person and “drink and be merry” and enjoy the days you have on earth. Ecclesiastes 8:15. If you are a decent person you will enjoy those days more and so will the people you meet and you might enjoy your days together.
