Developed nations almost always have an adult literacy rate of 96% or better. In contrast, the least developed nations manage an average literacy rate of only 65%.

The literacy rate for adults across the U.S. averages 88%.(2021)

Keep in mind the US also has a ton of illegal and legal immigrants and the scale here is based on English only.

21% of adults in the US are illiterate in 2022. 54% of adults have a literacy below 6th grade level. Low levels of literacy costs the US up to 2.2 trillion per year.

Nice copy/paste but literacy means they can’t read or write AT ALL meaning the grade level matters very little when just talking about literacy %’s.

So let’s take 21%. 15% of the population are legal immigrants and we don’t know a true number other than guesses on the illegal ones.

With that being said 88% is not that bad.

No no no. Not saying that. I’m saying if we take 88% are some form of literate in the US and the fact the US literacy scale is English and we have a 15% legal immigrant population that means a little over half of our immigrant population is dual literate most likely. But English not being their native language and them being 15% of our population absolutely brings down that literacy percentage. Because they test literacy in the US on ENGLISH ONLY.

Basically the US being a melting pot gives a slightly false representation of its literacy levels. Just slightly. I think they’d still be under 96% (probably 92-94% if they included non English literacy).
