try this one - its a conversation with a retired USDA Surveyor and he talks about how there are 2 types of surveyors
1 -a plainer surveyor
2 - a geodetic surveyor
A plainer surveyor is "allowed" to work on projects under 160 miles (isn't that all of them?) and work from the principal that the sea is level and therefore the land is always measured from above sea level. They never need to take into account the curve of the earth because its just not there.
so if ever parcel of land 160 mile section never curves into every other 160 mile segment - where is the curve?
