I think to be alive is something so special, there are hardly words to describe it. From the single celled organism to the human mind and everything in between.
Inorganic to organic. Science cannot duplicate it. Science cannot explain it and when tenured scientists suggest the possibility of an intelligent design, they lose their tenurship and are fired, never to teach or publish again.
Carl Sagan said that our consciousness is the universe becoming aware of itself, and for a long time after I left home (I was raised French/Irish catholic) I believed that. But the older I got, the more I read, the more I saw, I began to think there might be some truths in the ancient texts. Science hidden in their depths.
The new testament in my humble opinion is based on the life of a real human named Jesus who did preach against the Rabbi's getting fat and rich in their temples. He preached peace, love and above all forgiveness. He was literally the first true hippy.
If one were to live their life the way Jesus suggested, I believe there would be alot less hurt in the world. However, I do not believe he claimed to be the son of God. I believe a few bright individuals figured out a way to make some money off of their dead rebellious leader and so was born the new religion if Christianity.
New testament aside, I think the ancient texts. The old testament, noone even knows how truly old it is, the ancient texts from the misty past of India, the so ancient teachings of the far east....in all of these texts there are wisdoms passed down through the ages in the form of stories and parables.
Dr. Jordan Peterson put together a series of lectures on YouTube attempting to unpack some of those stories. The Cain and Able story took him hours to deconstruct and squeeze all the meaning out of it and it is literally a few lines long.
A very close friend of mine left medical school and spent 5 years working at an aids/cancer hospice for the poorest of the poor. One of his jobs was to sit with patients. Offer them comfort. He told me he witnessed several dozen people pass away in front of his eyes as he sat with them. He said at the instant of death, everything about a person changes. Their skin color turns dull, eyes become dull. He said there is a light inside of us. The light of life. And when it goes, there is no mistaking its existence.
So while I absolutely believe there is more to us than mere chemicals, I am also very aware that religions, even if they start out honestly, are like every other enterprise run by human beings.....they are corrupt.
God being inside each of us is ultimately the most true statement.
Telling someone they need to accept Jesus Christ into their hearts or they will not go to heaven is not only naive, it is dangerous. Jesus just happens to be the newest kid on the block in terms of how many religions (coincidentally enough all having the same dates for holidays/festivals etc...) have come before him.
If you are truly searching for answers, study the oldest writings. Look for the stories that cross oceans and are universal in human history. There you will find true wisdom and golden rules to live by.
Cheers
