Verse 9:5 which is an oft quoted verse of Surah Tawbah (repentance) because it translates roughly to "kill all the polytheists wherever you find them" and most non-educated Muslims and non-Muslims take this as a general call for murder. They often take everything out of context because they don't read the whole surah to figure why this has been said. Allah/God is only talking about fighting against those polytheists that betrayed the Muslims despite having a peace treaty between them. Verse 9:6, which is the verse that comes next, tells the Muslims to grant asylum to the polytheists who seek refuge from the war/during the war and literally 'escort them to safety'. Seems like a division of interests to first command the murder of all polytheists and then grant them safety if they desire it so.

This is because,if the whole surah is read and the context understood, Allah is only commanding the Muslims to act in self-defence to those polytheists who broke the peace treaty between them not to murder each and every non-Muslim there is.

Most people and unfortunately many Muslims do not understand Islam any better than a non-Muslim does. It takes an open mind and an eager heart to learn this religion and realise that all this fuss about the Quran commanding terrorism is baseless and unfounded.
