Yes, it is true that it isn’t the government’s job to play daddy. However, they could definitely put in some mandates for all companies. For instance, a mandate to make their apps not so addictive (targeted ads and suggestions, no age requirement, infinite content, bot-promoted propaganda, to name a few issues that currently go unchecked).
Until then, yes, it is the parents’ responsibility to protect their children. That’s why I made this thread, to highlight the dangers of today’s apps and the internet.
Spreading awareness of dangers is a good step.
How individuals decide to act on this is different.
Most people are apathetic towards problem solving. They'd rather someone else do it.
And to a degree in the US, we elect representatives to solve some of these societal problems.
The problem now is that people believe (in the US) that they live in a democracy when in fact we live in a Constitutional Republic.
So instead of the best interests of all being regarded when problem solving.
It's mob rule (democracy) and those who have the mob rule.
It's often too little too late before government regulations comes knocking on their door.
But they were so swept up in the mob frenzy that it felt right at the time.
As if they were making a difference, when in reality they were being corralled like cattle towards a predetermined solution.
