old testament is jewish. anyway the the jewish law was enforced by lashes or stripes the more severe stuff was a stoning (death). in the case of a 'slave (servant) breaking the law it fell to the master to administer the lashes or stripes as. that there is any protection granted to the 'slave is remarkable for the time.

if you dont like the first part choke on the second part. a 'slave in ancient israel wasnt anything like what we consider slavery today. a 'slave in ancient israel was a work contract a 'slave could leave his servitude at any time. some translations call it servant or bond servant.
