I think the most likely thing that happens is lack of experience. Like a flame going out, it just stops existing because consciousness is an emergent property of neural networks. Similar to what happens when you're under heavy anesthetic and your cerebral cortex stops all activity.

I think most likely they didn't face consequences in some ephemeral "afterlife", but since I've never experienced it, nobody has ever experienced it and come back under a rigorous environment I can't be totally sure.

At the very least I've never seen anything that indicates there's any kind of afterlife.
