why is the moon red sometimes? I've spotted quite a few over the years, never knew why it did that
It's common to see a orangish red or copper moon when the moon is very low in the sky (when it's rising, or setting), it has to pass through a large amount of atmosphere when it's passing through the horizon, as opposed to when it's high in the sky.
When you see a red moon that's low, by the time it hits higher in the sky it will go back to it's normal color.
Red light in particular, passes through the atmosphere without getting scattered as much. That's why the color will be more distinct and noticeable.
