It’s based on a diagnostic panel called CARMEN, short for Combinatorial Arrayed Reactions for Multiplexed Evaluation of Nucleic acids. Launched in 2020 by the Broad Institute and celebrated in Nature, CARMEN involves extracting viral RNA from patient blood plasma, making copies of it, then dropping these copies onto rubber chips, each one slightly larger than a smartphone and etched with thousands of “microwells.”
