He basks anywhere from 4-8 hours a day max. The rest is in the water.

Basking helps prevent shell rot and kills other bad bacteria on his shell.


EDIT:

Every time we first do a revamp of his tank he basks very little for a couple of days. I think until he is no longer worried he is going to get a “bath” again. He hates the apple cider vinegar mix we use on his shell but it also helps keep away shell rot.

How does he express that he hates it?

Goes in his shell and doesn’t come come out until I put him back in his terrarium once I start scrubbing him with the mix. Normally he’ll just stretch out and let me pet or scratch him with his brush.
