That's not dumb. Maybe just bring a small diameter drill and a small shovel. Dig a hole, drill a hole in that, stick down a metal tubing, then drop the rolls of money down around thick steel wire with anti rust coating. Or just place the money as you write in a long plastic tube easy enough to pull out.

And also, gps coordinates probably isn't a bad idea, if one can keep it hidden.

If spotted, nobody has a business asking what one is doing. But either way, just saying one is hunting mushrooms should be neutral enough.
