Eric Weinstein schools Terrence Howard in the subtle art of Guru-osity - Decoding the Gurus

Quote
"Decoding the Gurus" is a podcast hosted by Chris Kavanagh and Matt Browne.

Chris Kavanagh: He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Rikkyo University in Tokyo, Japan. His research focuses on the psychology of religion, rituals, and belief systems.

Matt Browne: He is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology at Central Queensland University in Australia. His research interests include decision-making, belief in pseudoscience, and the psychology of conspiracy theories.

Chris Kavanagh and Matt Browne, hosts of "Decoding the Gurus," have critiqued Eric Weinstein for several reasons:

Unsubstantiated Claims: They argue that Weinstein often makes grand claims about physics and other scientific fields without providing the necessary evidence or undergoing peer review. For instance, his proposal of "Geometric Unity," a theoretical framework he claims could revolutionize physics, has not been published in any scientific journal or subjected to rigorous scrutiny by the scientific community.

Anti-Establishment Rhetoric: Weinstein frequently criticizes the academic and scientific establishment, suggesting that groundbreaking ideas are being suppressed. Matt and Chris view this as a common tactic among those promoting pseudoscience, as it positions the speaker as a maverick or misunderstood genius.

Misrepresentation of Expertise: Although Weinstein has a background in mathematics, he often speaks authoritatively on topics outside his formal training, such as physics and economics. The podcast hosts believe this can mislead listeners into accepting his views without critical examination.

Appeal to Popularity: Weinstein's affiliation with the Intellectual Dark Web and his appearances on popular podcasts have given him a significant platform. Matt and Chris are concerned that his ideas gain traction more due to his media presence than their scientific merit.

These critiques are part of their broader effort to highlight and dissect what they see as the spread of pseudoscientific ideas and misinformation by influential public figures.

Interview with Flint Dibble on Pseudo Archaeology, the Hancock Debate and Science Communication - Decoding the Gurus

Quote
Flint Dibble is an archaeologist specializing in the study of ancient food and farming practices. He is particularly known for his research on animal bones and food remains from archaeological sites, which help provide insights into the diets, agriculture, and economic systems of past civilizations. Dibble's work often focuses on ancient Greece, and he has contributed to understanding how food production and consumption influenced social and cultural developments in antiquity.

Dibble is also active in science communication, frequently sharing his research and insights through social media and public lectures to make archaeology accessible to a broader audience.

Chris Kavanagh and Matt Browne have expressed critical views of Graham Hancock on their podcast, "Decoding the Gurus." Hancock is a well-known author and journalist who promotes alternative theories about ancient civilizations and historical events. Here's a summary of their perspective on Hancock:

Alternative Archaeology: Hancock proposes that advanced ancient civilizations existed long before those recognized by mainstream archaeology. His theories often lack solid archaeological evidence and are at odds with established scientific understanding. Kavanagh and Browne view these theories as speculative and not supported by credible evidence.

Pseudoscience: The hosts categorize Hancock's work as pseudoscience because it tends to rely on selective evidence, anecdotal accounts, and speculative interpretations rather than rigorous scientific methodology. They are critical of his tendency to present these ideas as credible alternatives to mainstream archaeological and historical scholarship.

Appeal to Mystery: Hancock often appeals to the allure of hidden knowledge and suppressed truths, which can be enticing to audiences but problematic from a scientific perspective. Kavanagh and Browne argue that this approach can mislead the public and contribute to the spread of misinformation.

Criticism of Academia: Hancock frequently criticizes academic institutions and mainstream scholars for allegedly ignoring or suppressing his ideas. Kavanagh and Browne see this as a common tactic among proponents of pseudoscience, framing themselves as mavericks challenging a closed-minded establishment.

Overall, Kavanagh and Browne's critique of Hancock aligns with their broader mission to scrutinize and debunk what they perceive as pseudoscientific claims made by popular figures.

Reading, Writing, and Fighting (with Mark Helprin) - EconTalk

I enjoyed the first part of the podcast where they talked about reading and writing, but wasn't that interested in the rest of the podcast that was mostly about current affairs.
