Whether you call it "pulling" or "pushing" is irrelevant. The fact is that there is a force in the direction of the ground which causes something to fall when I drop it by doing mechanical work on the object. If there was no force then when I drop something it would just hover in the air, as an object that isn't moving stays motionless unless a force acts on it.
