There are not jet streams going in different directions at the same time at different altitudes. But for the example of flights moving between Sydney and Johannesburg, I'm going to PRETEND there are. So flights leave going both directions at the same time, and both directions get the maximum benefit of these jet streams the entire way, each way, boosting their over-land speeds by 200 mph each way. Every time. A 747 still only cruises at .85-.88 mach, which at cruising altitude means about 570 mph. So their over-land speed ends up being about 770 mph, consistently. 770 mph still isn't even remotely fast enough for the planes to arrive at their destinations in 12 hours like they do in the real world, if the world were flat. They would need to average (including the jet streams) about 1250 mph to make their destinations on time over a flat Earth.
