take a slinky, stretch it to 10 feet, let go. what happens? does it return to its "natural state"? yup.

throw it in water, toss it into space, do literally anything and it returns to its natural form.

see?

rest it on a horizontal table in a u-shape and it won't return to its original shape and see that it does not meet the definition for a spring

Don't know where you get the idea that there's triggering going on here (besides in yourself) when I am simply sharing facts with you.

Your definition says:

Quote
a piece of curved or bent metal that can be pressed into a smaller space but then returns to its usual shape

...which omits torsion bars (straight springs):

Quote
A torsion bar suspension, also known as a torsion spring suspension, is any vehicle suspension that uses a torsion bar as its main weight-bearing spring.

...omits non metallic materials like plastic, ceramic, and rubber:

...and ignores that springs can also operate in manners other than compression:

In sum, your definition sucks.

none of your points have any value in determining or changing my definition from the dictionary
but nice post of cherry picking some apple sauce though, well done
