This is basic perspective, an object close to you does not have the same size perspective as an object far away from you. Here's an experiment for you to do.
Lay down on the ground - take a golf ball 1 inch away from you have your mom raise it to 6 feet and compare it to that same golf ball already 6 feet away as it it moves parallel to you.
If you dont notice the size difference between the two - you might be learning impaired.
As for how the layers of the atmosphere can act like a magnifying glass - consider the moon - sometimes it's really big - ever wonder why that is?
