The technology isn't "destroyed" it's decommissioned.

Why keep it around and maintain it if we aren't going to use it?

Strictly speaking we could probably still go to the Moon with what we have in museums, it's just that nobody would ever agree to go up in there again in those vessels because our technology has improved so drastically. It's just like the telegraph, we never lost the knowledge required to send telegraphs even though the technology to do so does not exist anymore. It's just that we would need to rebuild the infrastructure and there's just no point to it

Because it's not needed, and we have better options now.

That we destroyed the technology to send telegraph's doesn't mean that if we, as a society, wanted to rebuild it we couldn't do it fairly quickly.
