The philedelphia experiment, when you peel away the bull shit, was about stealth, the intention was to use ultra powerful electro-magnetic fields to produce a bubble that light bends light around an object, instead of reflecting off of it. thereby making the object invisible.

The experiment was a failure, but the theory is sound. How ever such strong magnetic fields present an array of problems that range from minor to catastrophic. One of which is a power source capable of producing said field.
