Thick layers of cotton cloth, then thick layers of plastic. In multiple bundles so you can get some when needed without unwrapping it all every time.

I'd do what I do now, hold almost no cash and invest all of it. In this case sounds more medieval, so land, crops, cattle and other food as well as the workers to tend it and subsequently tax them to continue to invest in my little Hamlet.
