It bothers me. There was a news story a long time ago, must have been ten years ago.. a young man working as an artist, painter. He said on the news that it's better to pay a little for someone that can handle the paperwork and finances, so one can spend more time doing what one wants to do, painting. Then i thought: How is it possible to make a livng like that? There was like several tenfolds of paintings in his studio. But who buys them? Why spend thousands on paintings that has zero precedence, i.e. they haven't been bought and sold, so they don't have any value record? It's like when you go to homestyle shops or even furniture shops, they usually have paintings or pictures for sale. And they do cost a bit sometimes. But they have Zero value once you leave the store with them. I haven't tried reselling them since i don't buy them, but when you see these auctions where paintings by more familiar artists sell, they are not usually very easily sold either. So it's like, whoever is going to buy from those that has no precedence at all?? How can people make a living doing that? Hard to understand. Must be some kind of rich parents' offspring that has nearly unlimited funds to mess around and flood the market with nonsense, hoping to gain a name within 30 years. I mean it just can't be worth it, can it? It's the same as in rock'n roll, you have maybe 1% of the bands being genuine, the rest are opportunists and flat-out phoneys that just produce garbage for the masses just because they can. And this confuses people as to what real art is, it drags down the appeal of the concept.

It's weird and i don't get it. I mean, it's okay, it's okay to mess around a little, do it on a hobby-style basis. But when it comes to like doing it on a business level, it becomes ridiculous to me ... what's the point? Why do something that's supposed to be done on an unlimited time and creativity based level, on a level of time crunch and money limitations? Hard to grasp.

Young artist prioritizes financial management over painting for sustainable living in the art world.
Skepticism exists about art market value; many paintings lack sales history and depreciate post-purchase.
Art market parallels music industry; most artists seen as opportunistic rather than genuinely talented.
Oversaturation of low-quality art confuses public perception of "real" art.
Art, ideally a free expression, is often constrained by business pressures and financial concerns.

Why do some people pay for fans when Google image search is free?
Art is subjective and it's value is up to the individual
Some people are fortunate enough to make a living and a good chunk of it is just plain luck

That can selling tapestry and paintings out the van? Yah, I'll take one of those crazy mushroom murals. Your patterns go hard. I can't wait to enjoy the art I like to look at.
Thanks random rand

To me, that is a bit of a cop-out to make people think so. It's not true. True art is about understanding how art function, or at least some understanding of it. Opportunists just try to copy good artists, or try to make what they make without understanding it.. or just make random stuff and hope for luck, as you mention.. which i agree with.

A lot of it is about luck, that's true. But some people understand what art is about.. it's not purely subjective. I can take a picture of my dinner plate and call it art, and price it at 100 000$. Nobody would ever buy it. Yet people pay millions for pictures of tomato soup cans. To me it's about stupidity, really .. how stupid someone must be to pay that much for it. Although at some level, they become investment objects.. so for the pure sake of money, then i can understand it, but it's still based on the opinion of the stupid. And that may not last forever. So it's a risky business.

The soup can thing is exactly what I mean by subjective
Who are we to tell someone how much to spend on something like that. They are going to spend their money how they please. People are paying for 4k resolution on their phones when the eye can only see 1080 on a tiny screen like that or 500 fps when we can really see at 100 fps or so tops. Or someone gets a car that can go 200 mph when you can only go like 90 mph tops without being on a race track or something.
