Italian has two verbs used as a "auxiliary verbs": to be (essere) and to have (avere). They both are used to make different verbal form with other verbs, but every single verb either uses to be or to have as auxiliary.
SO: Ho voglia di gelato (I want ice cream) uses to have (avere) as auxiliary.
Ho caldo/ho freddo instead, they use to have (avere) because you DO HAVE caldo/freddo, not in the sense of belonging, but still...
Sono felice uses to be (essere) because you ARE happy.
