Hey all, as the topic says, can someone explain the Xbow/shield/book or w/e vs a Bow? I've tried doing some research and the best answer I could find was using Crossbows vs harder hitting mobs so you can equip defensive items, or using a shortbow if the mobs die relatively quickly. Is this accurate information for OSRS? Could I have some examples of what to use vs certain mobs? I haven't played in years and trying to come back and understand more than I did before. Thanks in advance :)

It’s almost never worth using a short bow in osrs. At least in the later levels of the game. It completely depends on the situation. What you are killing what your ranged level is etc. maybe you could give an example of what you’re trying to accomplish?

In almost all circumstances a crossbow is better than a normal bow unless you're using a twisted bow.

Main reason is accuracy and bonus' you can get from an offhand + the variety of bolt types you can use.

Broad bolts are cheap, crossbow hits harder, just a few reasons off the top of my head

Alright this helps a lot. Seems most people agree with this as well. Obviously the Twisted Bow would be better, but I don't plan on getting that for a long time if ever.

This is some of the responses I've gathered doing my own research, but most of it was lack-luster information. Overall, you seem to be on the same page as Xrmd ;) I don't really have any specific mobs I'm trying to fight yet, however, my combat stats are: 70 att 60 str 60 def 40 range 44 prayer 17 magic. I've also got only 28 slayer, which is what mainly brought me to ask about the xbows. I planned on picking up slayer again once I have done Monkey Madness I and from there, planned on getting high-end combat stats so I can kill mobs to make some money. Chopping magic trees is meh unless super afking and I'm making slow money. I'm basically trying to catch some of my other stats up so I can do quests to use items I'd like to use and kill mobs i'd like to kill for slayer.

Thanks for the input everyone ;)

/e:

I am curious about the blowpipe though, I see a lot of people want to use that during the firecape endeavor.

Blowpipe is 100% the way to go. It’s better than crossbows in most situations. Requires 75 range though I believe.

I recommend using dorgeshuun crossbow with bone bolts until you can use rune crossbow with broad bolts. I think that’s the best way to go.

Or if you have some money to blow through you can grab yourself a cannon and cannonballs and use it to rush to 75 range and then just use a blowpipe

Depends on your budget :)

So the blowpipe is 2 handed or can you use an off-hand with it? What makes it so much better than crossbows? My guess of xbow vs blowpipe would be say if I'm fighting dragons, probably would use xbow and Anti-Dragon shield right? Mobs that hit harder or would require more defensive gear?

I haven't done the dwarf cannon quest yet, but I plan on doing that at some point to level up ranged more.

You cannot use an offhand with blowpipe, correct. Even at dragons I think blowpipe is better. There are certain antifire potions that offer 100% dragon fire protection when used with protect from magic. I’m not exactly sure how it works, as I haven’t had a blowpipe before (haven’t gotten one on my ironman yet unfortunately)

Crossbows are useful in pvp, and also in situations where the boss you are fighting has high health because you can use ruby bolt (e) which the special attack of which has a 10% chance to proc can hit up to 100 damage. This is useful on the last stage of olm and other end game content.

Blowpipe is good because it is one of the fastest if not the fastest shooting ranged weapon and you can fire darts up to dragon out of it

I wish I had more information to give you about why the blowpipe is so good, just trust me it is. Hahaha
