I've had a sudden urge to give this game a go... I've literally never played it.

Should I try the current RS or old school? I like the retro look of old school and it seems to have a bigger player base

Secondly, where do I start as a complete beginner? I obviously want to learn the game myself but a the same time don't want to waste hours and hours doing stuff I don't need to. A point in the right direction would be appreciated

Oldschool if you like grinding.

runescape 3 if you want easy scape and little to no grind.

I am a fan of the grind... kind of whats dragged me here

Also nothing is technically a time waste oldschool.

my recommendation is do as many quest as possible / start slayer ASap

Do an Ironman.

An ironman would indeed be good to learn. You would be forced to learn every aspect and grindy scenario in the game. tis fun not just oh go to GE n buy it zzz

In terms of membership, is it worth getting one now or at least play first?

old school is the way to go. Ironman is basically single player mode which a lot of players enjoy. youtube has a guide for literally everything in runescape.
game is trash without membership so plan to pay to play

game is pretty trash without mems but if youre literally starting fresh id reccomend playin like a week or so and experince the game a bit and what f2p has to offer. if you enjoy it definitely go membership and try out questing to get stats and learn areas and unlock things!

Dont do it. This isn't just some little side game you play and quit. It consumes you and will never let you go. Sure you could think ur quitting, but u always come back. There's no escape.
