You're at such a simple stage in your runescape adventure where even the most average boring drops are huge to you and the sense of achievement you feel when progressing on your own is much greater. In the late game you can easily average 5m+ gp p/h whereas in the early stages your first 1m might take you weeks (especially being new to the game). So where your friends can easily spare you 1m (less than 15mins of work), you'll find the game 100x more enjoyable if you earn it yourself

and when you get your first rune weapon you earned yourself its huge. very huge.

sadly this game has changed from how it was a decade ago, but everything comes in a lot easier then it did.

non the less, the rewards are worth the grind
