You had two options... pvp or non-pvp character.

Sleeping bag was added in 2003, when i played you could pk anywhere, the wilderness wasnt added, the best food was bread and the best weapon was a mithril two handed sword.
Main pk zone was the cabbage field next to lumbridge and the biggest update planned was falador.
