I always turn to Lovecraft. 'Shadow Over Innsmouth' is great.

I read a bit of one of King's collections of short stories, and they were pretty good. Very similar to a lot of Lovecraft's stuff.

And I second the Lovecraft suggestion. You can't get more classic horror than Lovecraft and King, at least classic American horror anyway.

You also might want to try Poe.

Altho, I'm not appreciating Poe's style as much as I thought I would.

I bought "The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe" a while ago and I read it every once in a while. I have to say it's simply great and exactly the chambre you are looking for.

Which stories have you read already? Imo his style aint that bad :)

I never said his style is bad, I would never dare to assume such things, I've read "The Murders in the Rue Morgue".

That's perfectly fine, I also dont like some well written pieces of literature even tough other people consider them as masterpieces. It's all about personal preferences.

Here a few Poe short story recommendations from my side:

- The Tell-Tale Heart (as mainstream as it may sound, but read it)
- Metzengerstein
- The Duc de l'Omellete
- The Gold Bug
- The Power of Words
- The Sphinx
- Diddling considered as one of the exact Sciences
