I just got back into reading Calvin and Hobbes, after a layoff dating back to the 1990s. I'm reading some of the Calvin and Hobbes books now. I think there's more cynicism, depth and creativity in Bill Watterson's comics than any of the last ten books I've read that weren't academics. That may change soon, since I will be reading Tolstoy's Ware and Peace soon. But I wanted to make the point that his characters are incredibly interesting. They aren't representative of an old theologian and an old philosopher. Calvin is the face of blatant (intelligent) immaturity against authority, while Hobbes is a testimony to subjective ways of looking at the world and believing things. He's not just a doll or even a friend of Calvin, but a measure of sorts. Very cool stuff. It's funny, it's downright silly, and it's cynical enough to count as socially critical art and perhaps even self-effacement on the part of Watterson. 10/10 for this comic strip!

Calvin and Hobbes is personally my favorite comic strip ever.
They
deserve respect, I have all the books. There's this 150$ special where
they have the entire collections in hardcover but I'm nowhere near that.

I was going to buy it but my wife objected to spending $200 on the collection at this time. So I guess it will be a future purchase. Has anyone else noticed that Hobbes used to have little paw pads on his front paws, but then they were deleted as the series went on? I was looking through the tenth anniversary book, and bc/ I read the descriptions after the comics, my theory was confirmed tongue.gif
