This blogger's first topic topic is literally why I started writing in my free time. I'm a journalism student, so I have some formal training, and, through some encouragement, decided to start writing fiction for fun. I truly don't think I'm good enough at this point to be published, but my goal for writing literature is to address this blogger's first problem with the "New Adult" genre.
As well as a writer, I also read a great deal. It is pretty much the key to becoming a great writer. My problem is that at this day and age I can't relate to books that are aimed to young high school teens as I used to be able to. It's just different now. I've experienced more. But, at the same time, I also cannot relate to novels written for older adults either (our parents generation.) Not to mention that many of the "New Adult" books on the market have women characters, were written by a woman, and were written for women. It drives me crazy. We hail from an insanely immaginative generation, and yet I have nothing to read that will truly move me. Nothing against romance novels and women themed novels, but I can't relate to a character that, let's face it, I haven't even scratched the surface of understanding.
That's why my goal for the fiction that I write is to be fun, imaginative, and either neutral or aimed toward a male audience.

*Anyways, as I said before, reading and researching other authors and novels is the best way to become a better writer. Does anyone know any good New Adult novels that are aimed toward a male audience or have at least have a male character that isn't only interested in getting shaft-deep in some big romance-fest?

Thanks :D

So I'm almost done reading the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher, and I think it might meet a few of the "New Adult" criteria. It might be a little too much for YA as it is pretty descriptive when it comes to battles, and briefly touches upon some sex scenes (which aren't very descriptive). However, it's not cringe-worthy or explicit enough to be deemed adult.

I'd imagine that Butcher's other series, the Dresden Files, is written in a similar way (New Adult).

I stopped reading for a long time, so most of what I have read are YA from when I was a kid...
I'll let you know if I find anything else that might be New Adult.

/e What about all those Warhammer books? They seem kind of graphic and geared towards males.

Thanks for the input, and I should revise what I said. There are some writers aiming toward a male audience in adult fiction, but the selection is limited.

not sure if this helps or exactly fits your needs but you could try Frank Schätzing: The Swarm

or another book of him: Limit

I think that the selection of "New Adult" books reflects its target audience. Those that read books of the New Adult genre, are probably mostly female. I'd be willing to be the percentages are something like 60-70% female and 30-40% male.

In the age range of 16-25, not many guys read. Nowadays, it's all sports or video games. Personally, I have very few guy friends who read regularly, but most of my female friends read a lot.
